First designed in Bermuda in the late 1800s, the Bermuda Fitted Dinghy is an acrobatic racing boat. Only 14ft. 1” overall, she carries at least 600 square feet of sail and is a veritable butterfly on the water. The long bowsprit is a characteristic, and coupled with the tendency to capsize, the crew is likely to be given an unexpected swim if the dinghy is not properly maneuvered.

 

The crew consists of an experienced helmsman, an energetic bailer with his metal hand-wash basin, and normally about four sailors as moveable ballast.

 

Dinghy racing is one of Bermuda’s oldest and most exhilarating sports. To start the season, traditionally on May 24^th, there is an All Club Race. The season ends in early September with the two boats Jubilee Cup Race between the East and west End Clubs. A vintage Fitted Dinghy, VICTORY 1, is on display in Bermuda’s Maritime Museum at Dockyard in Sandy’s Parish. It is well worth a visit to see this collection of the Island’s marine memorabilia.
